Penn Building
The Redevelopment Authority was awarded a $75,000 Anchor Building Grant to be loaned to Susquehanna Property Co., LLC towards Phase I of the redevelopment of the former Penn Furniture Building on the diamond in uptown Somerset Borough. Phase I includes a complete electrical overall of the building, as well as the retail build-out for Edwards Jones new Somerset office.
In July 2008, the Authority will be applying for approximately $350,000 of Anchor Building funds towards Phase II of the project. Phase II will encompass the remaining work to the building into Class A office space.
The Anchor Building grant is funded by the Department of Community and Economic Development's (DCED) New Communities Program. The funds are a grant to the Authority which can then be loaned at low interest to developers.
Windber 15th Street Streetscape
The Redevelopment Authority is acting as the project sponsor on a streetscape project on 15th Street in Windber Borough. The project includes new sidewalks, streetlights, ramps and trees. Construction is anticipated to begin in July 2008.
The 15th Street streetscape is being funded with Federal Highway Administration funds through PennDOT's Hometown Streets Program.
Meyersdale Waterline Replacement and Streetscape Project
In cooperation with the Meyersdale Borough and Meyersdale Municipal Authority, the Redevelopment Authority is involved with the replacement of the 120 year old waterline which lies beneath Main Street between Grant Street and the train station at the top of Main Street. The waterline is much deteriorated and needs to be replaced prior to the streetscape project.
The Redevelopment Authority is also serving as the project sponsor for a $1.3 million dollar streetscape which includes new sidewalks, streetlights, ramps, trees and pavers. The goal is to make the town welcoming and inviting to cyclists riding the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail. Other improvements include bike racks, benches and a stamped maple leaf at the intersection of Main and Center Streets.
Construction on the waterline is slated for July 2008 and is being funded with Somerset County CDBG funds, as well as Housing and Redevelopment Assistance funds from the Department of Community and Economic Development.
Construction of the streetscape is projected to begin in mid-September and is being funded by Somerset County Growing Greener funds, Community Revitalization funds from the Department of Community and Economic Development and Federal Highway Administration funds through PennDOT's Hometown Streets Program.
